Hi all

Currently trawling for a freeware PHP/MySQL site search engine and would appreciate any suggestions known to be effective.

I've never used any myself Chris. However I come across mnoGoSearch relatively frequently when reading php articles. there is a php extension for this in the PEAR repository and I understand that the engine can sit on (more or less) any SQL db.
 
I used PhpDig awhile back. I found when using it for a site search, it performed well. The results were on target and processing time was minimal. The only drawback I found was that the spider it uses is SLOW, and fairly resource intensive. To the author's credit they do mention this in the documentation, and this would only be prohibitive if you were going to use it to index and search 100s or 1000s of sites.
