Hi there folks...

Right, I've been using Windows for years and as such, am very used to it.

Recently, I switched to Linux at home and have adjusted fairly well to the applications I use regularly.
Now, my works are switching from Windows to Mac-based systems.
I'm not opposed to using Mac, I'm just not as clued up on the apps.

Can anyone recommend a decent IDE for Leopard?
I've been using the excellent PHPDesigner apps for years now. Sadly, there are no Mac alternatives.
Ideally, I'd want code-completion/inteli-code.

Kind of like Visual Studio but for PHP (and anything else is a bonus).

I don't want to use a virtual machine for coding (though I will to test in Internet Exploder).

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

Aptana Studio pro, is in my view the best. it's based on eclipse. yes it has syntax colouring and code hinting (and completion). the pro version also has debugging. i'd guess this will filter into the community version soon too.

oh. and although aptana comes with its own php installation (cgi) i prefer using a sapi module so i also install MAMP (community). be careful upgrading MAMP though - it overwrites the mysql databases. you need to backup the db first, then upgrade, then write back. or just copy the db directories out of the MAMP folder for the duration of the upgrade.

Thanks jpadie,

I'd downloaded Aptana before but for some reason, never looked at it.

I've just had a quick look (on Windows) and it seems to do just what I want.
Thanks a lot!

there are some annoyances (like having to refresh the project tree to see new files), some bugs (debug does not work as smoothly as it should). but for a free product it's fantastic value!

i've switched over completely from dreamweaver to aptana. never fire up DW anymore. and it plays nicely with my svn server, which is always good...

Cool - while on the subject....

Happen to know of any decent apps for writing/testing regular expressions?

I know that a decent coder 'should' know their expressions, but it's nice to have a workbench to test on before starting hours of beard stroking...

The head honcho here already has a Mac so we're already sorted for FTP (yummy) but he uses Coda. It looks nice and all but doesn't appear to have the guts I am after.

Thanks again for your help.

the best (imo) for mac is reggy.
i'm not familiar with coda.
for ftp i use aptana! although increasingly i am using webdav instead. for ftp outside of aptana i use macfuse with macfusion which opens the ftp site as a folder in finder.

Thanks again jpadie...

Reggy looks just like what I am after - thanks given again!

Thanks Greg, I've been looking in Smultron. I think Aptana is going to do everything I want it to but it's nice to have an alternative to play with.

Well, that's me done I think.

Almost everything else I use is open source or cross-platform so I'm pretty sorted.

Thanks for all the help.

they certainly do! and at EUR350!

i think that they also produce a community version which is, like Aptana, based on eclipse.
i have found this version easier to install than going the raw eclipse route and adding on PDT. and this way you *should* get the debugging features for free right now.

BUT ... i have tried numerous times to get it working and never felt that i'd got it humming. Aptana has always been easy.

If anyone has experience of PDT and can wax lyrical on its benefits (and advantages over Aptana), I would _love_ to hear from them!
