php/http authentication

How can I authenticate an user via browser using php/http authentication, and retrieving data about the users from the local system to validation ?

Does http authentication chances the owner of the unix process? I sthere anyway to do this?

u can use the http header stuff as found on php.net.
also it is possible to use an .htacces (find it with google, many resources) or use a mysql http authentification this way a box pops up and the user has to be in the db. (also a howto findable with google: serachwords: .htaccess with mysql), u have to make changes in httpd.conf mcvdmvs
