PHP - DB2 Connect Performance problem

We have a Linux/Apache/PHP website which is attempting to interface with DB2 Connect.
When running an SQL command on the command line on the webserver , the response time is very good
When executing the same SQL statement from within PHP, the response time is appaling
Can anybody point us in the right direction ?
