I'm new to the PHP list, can some body give me an url or give me a quick explanation about how to set up a Database and beging to use it in PHP? Is it like CF where you have to log in as adminsitrator and set up the datasource first?

Thanks for any tips you can give me :)

-Ryan.

No, It's not like CF at all.

Are you planning to use PHP on a Windows server or a Unix server?

We're planning on using RedHat 6.1... i've been reading up on PHP and MySQL a bit... all i've managaed to pick up is that i'm totally ignorant! *grin*.

BTW, thanks for the quick response! :)

-Ry.

OK, if you have MySQL running on your machine, you dont have to be root at all no.

There is a utility called MyAdmin which is very good and you can use it through your browser to administer ALL of your mySQL stuff.

You can get it from <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> a charm
Liz Kimber

<a href=
I will have to cast my vote for a different web-based MySQL manager: phpMyAdmin at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> is a much more mature piece of software, at version 2.0.5, and it has a REALLY nice interface. It is almost as featureful as Enterprise Manager for MSSQL 7.

One of the cool things about it is that it's written in PHP, so you can browse the code to pick up tips about how to use PHP with databases.

Another good place to go for beginners is Linux InfoPages by Ying Zhang at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> of the links there is a very BASIC guide to setting up a PHP page that connects a form to a database.
I need some example code to access a table called jewelry on a server called localhost and database called msdiamonds_net how do I go about accessing this database and printing the values of the rings field only in a nice list with paging like (records 1 through 10)?

Anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

have been lost in asp for a while...PHP is something entirely new to me

God Bless
Chris
