I need to learn a graphics package for web development. Can someone tell me what are the advantages of Photoshop v Fireworks?

Cheers,

Mike

If you are evaluating for purchase, consider not purchasing either. GIMP.ORG offers free software suitable for web graphics. GIMP can offer previews as you save web graphics with varying compression levels, just like Fireworks and Photoshop.

Photoshop is obviously much more feature-rich than Fireworks but you may not need all those features if you are simply doing RGB web graphics.

Photoshop is huge, especially if you're just resizing images for the web. If you're boss doesn't care about cost, than Photoshop is a good investment for other reasons (especially in the graphic to print area). However, Illustrator is also great in terms of web graphics--but very expensive too.
So a compromise might be Corel's Graphic Suite, where you get Image editing software (Photoshop) as well as vector/illustration software (Illustrator). GIMP is fine to, as are several other low cost options. you wouldn't believe the amount of people who buy a full version of Photoshop (for home or office) and don't use 80% of the features.

I know next to nothing about Fireworks, we just got it here in the office in the Studio 8 package.

However, I know that if you are looking for a more web-based imaging application then you are going to want to use Fireworks - And I would even harbor getting the whole Studio 8 suite. In the end the Macromedia Apps work really well together to create web-based works. I am such a huge fan of Adobe, so it is odd for me to say this. . . good thing Adobe bought Macromedia. :)

As for a one-on-one comparison. Fireworks looks like it combines the concepts of ImageReady, Photoshop, and a little bit of Illustrator (Vector Drawing). Therefore giving you more for you money.

In the end it depends on why you are comparing them to one another.
