i recently uninstalled adobe photoshop from my computer
the problem is that now i cant open any .bmp,.jpeg or .gif files directly ie by double clicking on the icon
i have to open them with paint or some other similar program all files are showing the windows icon
how can i get the original settings back

Normally when you double click an icon that doesn't have a particular program designated to open it, then it should pop up a dialog box 'Open With'. The simple way to correct this would be to find 1 file of each extension that is the program, double click them, and select the correct program to open it, making sure you check the 'Always use this program to open this file' box.

If that's not happening the way it should there is another way. Depending on your version of windows, but i'll explain how to do in 98, and it's pretty much the same in other versions. Open up Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types. It will pull up a list of registered file types. Scroll through til you find the ones you need. So say you find the one for JPG. If you click on it, it should say what program is set to open this file. In your case it might say Photoshop (which doesn't exist on your system anymore) or nothing, or unknown program. Either way open it up, and look in the box under "Actions" for the "open" line. Click that line, then click edit. Under "Application used to perform this action" use browse to select the right program to open that extension.

If all else fails, under File Types, find the line with the extension in it, and remove it completely. Then repeat the first paragraph. Good luck. Let me know what happens, and if this helped.

ted,
thanx but this didnt work
there is no "actions" option when i click on it
there is an edit option but that doesnt help either
file types shows the program it is opened in which is IE but nothin happens
n there is no open with option

Obviously you skipped the last paragraph.

"If all else fails, under File Types, find the line with the extension in it, and remove it completely. Then repeat the first paragraph. Good luck. Let me know what happens, and if this helped."

Remove the line completely out of file types. Delete it. Then do the first paragraph again, which is clicking the file, making it open the "open with" box, and select the program.

Also....

I never said there was an "actions" option. If you select the file type, then click edit it pops up this box. Top says looks somewhat like this

|---------------------------------------------
| -----
| | |
| | | Change Icon
| -----
|
|
|Description of Type | JPEG image|
|
|Content_Type (MIME) |image/jpeg |
|
|Default Extension for Content Type |.jpg |
|
|Actions:
| -------------------
| | open |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| | |
| -------------------

------------------
Select Open there, then click Edit.
It pops up another window, and from there click browse and select the correct program.

hi again
i did find the actions "option"
u were right i missed the last para
anyways i removed the jpeg extension
when i tried to add it again n selected the .jpg extension i was informed that its already being used by photoshop so i have to choose another extension
so that didnt work either
thanx anyway

Simply keep scrolling through the file types one by one, and find things that have Photoshop as the program to open with, and remove. It's a lengthy, boring process, but it's better than re-installing =)

Another option I guess would be downloading some free-ware program like Irfanview, that views all types of image extensions. In the options after you install you can select what extensions to associate to this program, and that way they're opened by that, and it should over-write all the photoshop garbage. It's actually a really nice program you can use for editing too.

You can download Irfanview at
Again, good luck =)

hi ted :)
thanx a ton
i finally got all my extensions where they should have been
irfanview did all the work for me
bless u

Phew. Finally I came up with a useful suggestion =) I'm glad it all worked out. At this rate i'll be TipMaster of the week in no time =).
