Hello, we have one user running OS.9 and office 2001, recently she complaints that when double-click some of the Excel files then will see Adobe Photoshop goes up trying to execute the file, does anyone know why would this happened?

Been a long time since I used OS 9, but I believe you want to rebuild the desktop file.

Reboot the mac, hold down the apple and option keys during startup until it asks you if you want to rebuild the desktop file. Click the affirmative.

If that doesn't get it, I think you may need to use the, uh, shucks. Can't remember now. Internet Control Panel? It's the control panel that allows you to map helper applications, and it is either called Internet or its called File Exchange, in Control Panels under the Apple menu.

Not a great post on my part. Try the rebuild of the desktop, if that works or if it doesn't please post your experience here. I'll have the name of the control panel for plan B by then.

Thanks and good luck.

Thanks for your post.

Actually rebuilding the desktop doesn't help on this problem, and i also use Techtool Pro to scan thru the whole system, but the situation still the same.

The above link references an 'Easy Open' control panel, which I don't recall. I would try File Exchange or PC Exchange control panel, because it should give you control over the link between file type and application.

Actually, rebuilding the desktop is supposed to work, according to everything I've been able to find on this topic. You might want to try using Techtool Pro to rebuild the desktop instead of the keyboard shortcut. It apparently does a more thorough job than the keyboard shortcut.

By the by, are these Excel files local or on a server? Do they open in Excel if you drag them onto Excel or open Excel then ask Excel to open the files? I'm just wondering if the problem isn't that these aren't really Excel files.

thanks for any info.

I agree with kertusa. The Macintosh under OS9 uses 2 x 4-character codes in the header of the files to indicate to the system which application is the CREATOR and the TYPE of the file.

For example (codes may be slightly incorrect):-

[creator] QXPR - would indicate the document was created by QuarkXpress

[type] XDOC - A regular QuarkXpress document
OR
[type] EPSF - Encapsulated PostScript File

The type is required as Quark can both create regular documents or export to EPS files - for example:-

The PC in contrast uses the file extension to determine this. So if you changed a file extension from .DOC (Microsoft Word) to .PSD it would change to a Photoshop icon. This would cause problems for obvious reasons. PC Exchange will notice when PC disks are put into the Mac and add appropriate header information dependent on the file extension it sees. This could be the root of your problem - or something similar.

As kertusa states - you can easily experience the problems you are facing if the desktop needs rebuilding - don't give up on this route yet.

Sorry if you already knew this!

Kind Regards
Duncan
