I'm trying to redo the graphic layout of my website ( using a background I designed in photoshop6 (currently a simple graphic mostly for test purposes) and transparent text links (also Photoshop), which I also used on my previous layout. However, I'm having trouble with the transparent text gifs with this background. I make them like any transparent gif, but when I put them on top of my background on my site there is a white border around the text. The background I used before was solid black in the menu area so I was able to simply change the white to black and you couldn't tell that there was a problem. But my new background is going to be a little more elaborate. Currently I have the gifs from my old layout still up because they don't look QUITE as bad as the new ones, but they still have the border. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

If you need to do it to explain it (I know I have to when helping people with stuff like this) I'm using font Perpetua, size 40, style strong, color #96909C

Thanks so much for your time!

gif's can't do partially transparent pixels. it's all or none (photoshop takes the partial transparent pixels and substitutes white underneath). you may want to look into using a png instead (i think png files can do it, not sure though). -- cut here --

Hi,

The white border you see is called the "Fringe" effect. You usually get it when you try to extract a picture from a background then try to place it on a different colored background. However I'm not seeing why this is happening to you. You could try to re-do the text, except if you know it is going to be on a black background, make a bottom layer that is completely black then when you save the image, be sure to delete the black layer first. See if that does anything.

Also, after making the text you can place a small black halo around the text so that you don't get a white fringe. Simply make your text, then rasterize/render it, then goto SELECT|LOAD SELECTION then goto SELECT|MODIFY|EXPAND and expand the marquee by 1 or 2 pixels then make a new layer, put the new layer at the bottom then fill it with black then merge the 2 layers together and then save your .gif.

As for mrgone4662 statement. He/she is correct. You cannot have partially transparent .gif's, it is either a color or it's transparent. As for using .png's you can do this b/c .png's support what is known as alpha transparencies, BUT not all browsers support .png's so it is a toss up and is your decision to do so, but remember not everyone will be able to see your picture.

Try my 2 methods above, and if they don't work we shall go from there.

Hope this helps! NATE
