photoshop locking up after image load

My photshop locks up after I try to resize, add text, or basically anything to a pic. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, reinstalling my O.S. (XP pro). Im now stuck in the middle of designing a site with any image editing software. This makes it kinda hard to get things done if you know what I mean. Any advice on this at all would help.

I can add effects and swatches to the image tho without any problem.

have you tried zapping the pram its like defragmenting but faster (command+option+p+r durring start up)or increasing the amount of ram in your copm image editing takes a lot of memory cause it sounds like your running out of scratch disk space of you don't have a fast enough processor I've run into the problem your decribing on older or slower machines quite a bit.
