Using Photoshop Deluxe Business Edition, a user is trying to open some .jpg files from an e-mail. When she double clicks to open a file Photoshop gives an error saying it cannot recogonize the extension. I had her try to open the file in word and it opened as a bunch of garbage. I'm thinking it's something wrong with the files sent to her.

She has the same problems with other .jpg files but those opened fine going through word. She claims that one day everything works fine and the next day she gets these problems. She has uninstalled/reinstalled and still gets the same problems. Any ideas anyone? Thanks for your help.

Word can't open the jpg but a jpg can be added to a word file.

In Word do the following Insert > Picture > from file > (pick your jpg) and see if it displays in word

Right. That's what I tried, and it came up with all letters and boxes. Obviously there is something wrong with the picture file. But I'm wondering why Photoshop is having problems with some .jpg files one day, then not the next day.

Try using an image viewing app - Irfanview (good & free) will work (the only one i'm sure of anyway).

It should recognise the actual file type (I suspect it may be a .bmp with an incorrect .jpg extension), and ask if you want to rename it - which you should.

Either that or it may be a corrupt Jpeg; in which case Irfanview may be able to show you some of the image.

Moe: It could have been a real ugly situation, but luckily I managed to shoot him in the spine.

I have had problems with my old Micron keeping up with an 802.11b wireless connection. It will sometimes drop bits and screw up the file or screen being transmitted. Other times, it can keep up. Basically, it's too slow at 200mhz.

MS Word and Adobe Acrobat use their own embedding bitmap format to conform the image to their own file convention.

I wouldn't be surprised if your Bus. Ed. Photoshop user was able to open similar files in the past. It all hinges on how the file dependencies are saved. One day fine; next day not is a little doubtful.

Find out whether or not the delivering party (creating the .doc file) has changed their save setup.

It probably isn't a problem with the file type, it's just that Photoshop is unable to parse the data MS Word has applied to it.
