Hello!

I am a big Adobe fan and use Photoshop and GoLive to do most of the web work. But there is one big bug I have (both at home and in my school computer lab) that drives me CRAZY. I use GoLive 6.0.1 and Photoshop 7.0.1 in Windows 98.

When both programs are open, if I go into Photoshop and click File-->New (or File-->Open), the computer pauses for a good 15-30 seconds before the next dialogue box comes up. If I close GoLive, the problem goes away and the box appears immediately.

I can't find mention of this anywhere in any forum or Adobe support! Is this just me?

You don't mention your system specs, but I suspect that if you are still running 98 that your system may be a bit long in the tooth. Both of these Adobe apps require a bit of muscle to run efficiently.

A cheap fix would be to increase your system RAM to 512Meg. Any more than that will not really offer too much advantage on a Win98 system.

Also, if you have multiple hard drives on your PC, switch your Photoshop scratch disk to the other drive.

Also try playing with the preferences>memory usage, tweak it up or down to see if that helps. If you have too little RAM, tho, there is not too much else you can do.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Thanks for the tips. I'm running P-3s with 256 MB RAM. Nothing that makes me think it should be too cumbersome. What's weird is that on my home computer the same problem exists...this one is an oldie 533 mhz with 384 MB RAM...now that I expect to be slow. But it's the exact same pause length at the exact same places (New and Open dialogue boxes).

I will play with memory usage preferences. So far I haven't found any magical combo.

I suspect that you are running with only 256M of RAM to be a prime culprit. What OS are you running? If You are running XP, it is a resource hog, too. With all 3 apps open you have your RAM pretty much maxed out and the apps have to switch back and forth between RAM and hard disk swap. That is the delay you are seeing. If you increase the RAM, which is really cheap these days, you will see the most bang for your buck as far as increased performance.

I have the same problem on my PIII 500MHz at home, especially with multiple apps. With 512M of RAM I saw a major improvement in performance, enough to buy me time until I build my new box and bring myself into the 21st century!

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
