Photoshop runs slow in large fies.
the machine does have 1.25 GB DDR SDRAM.
and it is a 1.25 GHZ PowerPC G4 with 1MB L3 cache.
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics.

when i have a very large file 300mb or larger in photoshop. the machine is extremely slow. i spend more time watching my beach ball spinning then i get work done.

Our company cannot afford to buy a new mac. and we added more ram last year. which did not really help the problem.
does anyone know what i can add that may fix this.
maybe i need a new processor?

...how much disk space is remaining on the computer?

andrew

2 basic steps:

1) make sure you have a separate dedicated scratch disk (not a separate partition but a separate disk from the system disk)

2) go to preferences and drop the history states level down (maybe to 10)

10.4.11 osx

40.02 GB available on hard drive.
34.5 used.

also have an extra hard drive that we installed.
178.41 GB availiable.
54.33 used.

...300Mb isn't a small image by any means, so some operations will likely run a bit sluggish after a while...

...one area to look into is the tile plugin:

Quit Photoshop.

Locate the "~Bigger Tiles" plugin

Photoshop CS2/Plug-Ins/Adobe Photoshop Only/Extensions/Bigger Tiles

Rename the file, removing the tilde (~) from the file name.

Start Photoshop and you may see an improvement in performance.

its faster now. when i dedicated another scratch drive. plus bumped up using more ram to 88%.
and dropped the history states to 10.
i also removed the ~ from the bigger tiles plug-in./
i was unable to download the free titanium program.

i wonder if adding even more ram would help. since photoshop is using 88% of the ram... maybe i need more for my other applications.
because quark is slow too. and the opening of other programs as well.
there is one more slot open for more ram.
