I cannot open photoshop 6
It freezes when it gets to the point of'loading Fonts'
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but the
same problem occurs.

The problem may be with one of your fonts rather than with Photoshop; do you have any problems with any of the fonts in other packages? (e.g.: Word)

Try removing or renaming your fonts directory, copying just the basic times, courier stuff back in and then seeing if Photoshop starts up - if it does then obviously one of your fonts is killing it so you just need to copy them back bit by bit and see which one causes the problem.

Just an idea anyway!

I have the same problem. PS just locks up on reading fonts while program is loading. I have narrowed it down to a compatibility issue with an HP office jet g55. When I uninstall that...no problem with photoshop. BUT, I don't know how to fix it yet.

Thanks Petitpal. I removed all fonts except those loaded with Windows ME. Now PS6 does not lock up when loading. Apparently one of my problems was a bad font. [thumbsup2]

Your problem was likely a corrupted font, or it could be too many installed fonts. I recommend no more than 100 installed fonts or you are asking for problems.

That link is to a free font management program that I have had good luck with so far. Also you can use Adobe ATM Deluxe4.1 or Bitstream's font manager (both are under $100 US). They will allow you to install and uninstall fonts on the fly.

Also, you will want to delete and reinstall from the source disk ny offending or potentially bad font. Free fonts are often the offensive party in these types of situations. You do get what you pay for :) When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I have similar problem that my PC lock up during the phrase of initialization. I had removed all fonts except those come with Windows 98. However, the same thing happens again. What else should I do for troubleshooting now?

Kev,

What vs of PS? How much RAM? Do you have Norton AV or another AV or app running?

I would suggest removing all temp files, they sometimes play games with your system. Do a scandisk/defrag, reboot, make sure NAV and other similar apps are off, then try to open PS.

If that fails, uninstall, clean up the registry if you know what you are doing there, and then reinstall and see what happens.

Hope this helps When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

I have Photoshop 6.5 installed on a new machine with a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro... however, I cannot
open Photoshop. I have not yet installed any other fonts
and I have a 1.33 ghz cpu and 512 mb of memory. I have
reinstalled Photoshop several times but it still DIES
every time I try to open it. HELP !!!

Photoshop 6.5? I am afraid there is no 6.5. There is 5.5, 6.0 and now 7.0 is soon to hit the store shelves.

Are you running an antivirus such as Norton AV? If so, disable it before doing the install, and disable it before opening PS.

Make sure that you have the latest video drivers installed. What graphics card are you using?

Use windows control panel>fonts to check to make sure the fonts installed are not corrupt.

Let us know how you are doing after trying these, and we will try to narrow down your problem.

I cant beleive how many times I have answered this question.

DO NOT under any circumstances manually add fonts to your Windows fonts folder. The OS is bad and it's memory managment is not equiped to handle your graphics needs. For those of us who cannot afford a Macintosh you must work around Microsofts shortcomings. Number 1: Get a font manager. Suitcase from Extensis if preferable since adobe will no longer be supporting ATM Deluxe. The only fonts that should be in your system folder are the ones put there by installers. Good font management is just a good habit to get into, even on a Mac.

I agree 100%. use a font manager to simplify your life. Most people take fonts for granted and do not understand the complexity. There are many good font managers out there. I personally prefer Bitstream Font Navigator to Suitcase (no longer supported, but available on CorelDRAW CDs) and have even found 2 freeware management programs that perform acceptably. It doesn't matter which one you use as long as you use it!

There is no reason one cannot use MS control panel>fonmt to manage fonts other than it is clunky and inefficient. In a pinch it will do.

Rules of thumb, keep the installed fonts down to a minimum, I keep mine to around 100 or less; use a font management program ALWAYS!!!; and ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS install and uninstall fonts using these programs. If you are too cheap to lay out $100 for ATM, Suitcase, Bitstream and too lazy to d/l the free Font Thing and use it, you deserve the font problems you will run into; and lastly, avoid the often poorly designed free fonts like a plague.

just my humble opinion.... When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Let me close with this.

If you have a graphic of a font your trying to match, you absolutly have to try the whatthefont tool at it is frikkin incredible. Lastly, once myfonts has named the font for you goto to search for it. 9 out of 10 times you'll find the real font for free! BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!
