My photos are not printing in Illustrator in as high a resolution as when I import the same graphic into Word (with same printer settings). Are there resolutions setting in Illustrator itself?.....I'll look....but if there's a quick answer on why this would be happening I would appreciate it.

By default, Illustrator links to the original file rather than importing the whole thing in. This makes things a lot faster, and on PostScript printers it will print fine, as long as Illustrator can find the original.

One way around this is to embed the image rather than linking. When you go to File > Place, there is a check box called "Link". Deselect it, and it will import entirely.
