Hi,

I'm trying to build and print a photo portfolio. The digital pics are 1600 x 1200 (5.5MB) and I need to copy and paste into MS Word so that it will print sharp in color. Problem is I copied and pasted on MS Word, but photo results are really poor. Any suggestions how I can improve image quality?

I've also attempted to use Photoshop and I changed the imaged size from 5.5 MB to 2.18 MB at 200 pix/inch (size 5 x 3 inch). I want that exact size to appear on my word documents. But when I copy and paste in MS Word, MS Word said it's too large.

Please help. Thanks

Hi,

Do you have access to Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Pagemaker or better yet Adobe Acrobat (not the reader), I would use those rather than MS Word. I have always had problems getting images to look good in M$ Word. I do believe Word
is limited with regards to images.

If you make this into a .pdf it will print, view and look the way you want it to.

Hope this helps!

Though i would not use Word for what you are doing, try "inserting" the image via the menus rather than copy/pasting.
When you copy/paste I have a feeling that Word will make its own version of the image. This is of inferior quality to the original.
Remember, at the end of the day, Word is a Word Processor with too many extras bolted on, not a page make up application.

Thanks a lot. REally appreciate Sypderix's & Foamcow's input.

Although I agree that Word is definitely NOT the best app to use for this project, if it is all that is available then you CAN make it work. But you must use the right procedure and the graphics must be in the right format.

By copying and pasting the graphics into Word, rather than using Insert Picture, you are leaving the image on the clipboard, which by default only allows a 72dpi image - hence the poor print quality. Also you have not said what file format these graphics are in nor what sort of printer you are using.

Save your images in Photoshop as <b>200dpi RGB TIF</b> images.

1. If printing to a desktop printer, 200dpi should be a sufficiently high enough resolution to get clear prints.

2. RGB because all MS products cannot handle/understand CMYK images. And most desktop printers are geared for the necessary conversion of RGB to CMYK for printing (most desktop printer users don't know nor are even aware of the difference) - but it may not do the prettiest job. Depends on how well the RGB colours translate to CMYK - you can check this in Photoshop.

3. TIF is the safest format to use, although a high quality (low compression) JPG is also acceptable to Word and will make the file smaller.

I don't know all the specifics of your process however let me share my experience.
I recently purchased all the necessary components for digital photography and still had blurry or blotchy pictures. I have a Canon S800 photo printer which at the time was top of the line. To cut a long story short, I finally bought paper specific to my printer and presto.
After spending a few thousand dollars on equipment I was getting chensie(cheap) on paper and it really showed.
Hope this helps
