Hi All,

User is double clicking on a *.jpeg file that Photo Editor is used to open.

Photo Editor starts up fine, but does not open the file. You then need to manually goto "File, Open" and select the file to get it to open properly.

I have double checked the file associations and they are setup fine.

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks.

Is the Photo editor on the taskbar, but not opend up or is Photo editor Window and the picture not showing in the Photo editor window?

Photo Editor opens in full window mode. But it does not open the file.

You have to manually go to "File,Open" to get it to work.

I have run into two issues. Maybe one will help.

First one (the one you arent' experiencing) is clicking on jpgs and then "nothing" happens. What acutally happened was that Photo Editor opened MINIMIZED on the taskbar and you must right click on it and choose maximize or restore.

Second (which may be your issue) is that Photo editor opened yet the FILE is minimized withing Photo editor. You may try looking for a minimized file inside of Photo editor. Make sure the Photo editor screen is MAximized.

Out side of this I am not sure what it may be but will continue to do some checking.

Thanks for the idea's but, neither apply.

There are no minimized files inside when it opens. And It is opening in a maximum window.

Is there a switch I should be putting into the "Open" command within the file type windows?

I've had this happen before, I just deleted the file association and re-created it. Just go to your File Types (either View/Folder Options/File Types or Tools/Folder Options/File Types) and scroll down to .jpeg, click Edit (Win9x) or Advanced (2K/Xp), click on the Open action, the Remove, then New. The Action is "Open", and just browse to PhotoEd.exe. There shouldn't be any switch required for the Open command.

If that doesn't work, does this person have any problems opening any other file types? Do they have any other image editors (Photoshop, PSP) or browsers (Mozilla, Opera) installed? I've found sometimes that if there is more than one application that can be associated with a filetype, sometimes this will happen. Maybe they're fighting over who gets to open it, I don't know. ;-)

If that doesn't work, try a freeware image editor like IrfanView. I've found it's quite reliable in resetting and editing it's file associations. If you install it, and your jpegs still won't open, I'd begin to suspect something more seriously wrong with Windows.

Unfortunately I don't know of any switches. I have XP and my command line for opening jpg's in Photo Editor is

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd\PhotoEd.exe "%1"

I will still do some checking. Sorry I was unable to help.

tgalownia I am having the same problem. How did you fix it?

You wrote...

Sorry I have been on vactaion etc. . .

I don't know of a way to correct this issue. From my understanding . . . a good portion of the time it is from the computer being shut down or logged off with Photo editor minimized when starting back up or logging back on Windows will remember it was minimized. (That is the story I got. :) ) Not sure of other reasons as it has happened to me and don't have any programs open etc when I log off or shut down the computer. When I am done with a program I close it until needed again so I am not sure why it happened to me. But atleast the right click fix has worked for me so far.

Hello all,

Upon reading this thread, I recognize that I had posted a note to a thread started also by M mot98:
thread 68-575703
where a procedure is proposed to rectify this annoyance.

I have only this to say as to the cause. I think tgalownia nearly get the core of the matter. The problem is that using right-click context menu to associate .jpg to photoed.exe by checking 'always' is only a practical way of associating files. It does not provide enough control to users. You have always the option to edit the action command via the File & Folder Options applet to your complete satisfaction. However, for this case of photoed.exe, the practical way fails to deliver the minimum customer satisfaction. It fails to append the "%1" to the action commandline. Hence, this less than satisfactory feature. The only amendment is to edit the commandline yourselves.

Hope this explains the reason why this appears.

tgalownia and etamura,

This thread is pretty old, so I don't know if you solved your problem or not. I just had it happen to me and I corrected it by doing this:

Go into the registry to the key named
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Photo Editor\3.0\Microsoft Photo Editor
then delete the value
Code:
InitialPosition

When you restart Photo Editor this value will be recreated, and it will start normally.

Thank you . . will keep this in mind next time it happens or I get a call on this. :)
