I am trying to figure out how to brighten yellow teeth and have them still look like teeth! If anyone has any tips I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Use the freehand marquee (lasso) to select the area of the mouth inside the lips - feather your selection a few pixels, then use the sponge tool (next to the dodge tool) with a soft brush at about 10% to desaturate the colors. The yellow will turn gray - then use the dodge tool. Don't brighten too much or it will look like the teeth are glowing.

Eeek! Don't paint with the dodge or sponge tool or you will likely create spotty effects. Do everything as one uniform action that you can interactively preview before committing to.

*Lasso/Select the teeth (with a minor bit of feathering to avoid a cartoonish outline).
*Adjust colors (COMMAND-U [Mac] or CTRL-U [PC]). De-saturate to get rid of the yellow (do not go all the way to B/W or else it will looked retouched).
*Adjust brightness/lightness if the saturation change affected the contrast with the gums and lips.

Hi,

Pop into quick mask mode, make a marquee selection around all the teeth, then exit quick mask, make a new layer, fill it with an off-white color and lower the opacity and/or play with some blending modes.

Hope this helps!

My opinion lies somewhere between jimoblaks and spyderix....

For selecting the area I prefer using quick mask mode over the lasso tool, maybe using a slightly soft brush (but not too soft in this case). I find it's more accurate and less frustrating! Using Paths is another option, although when you convert them to selections, be sure to feather it a little.

As for altering the colors, then I would use one or two of the color adjustment tools, such as Hue/Saturation, rather than painting on a new layer. Again, just my own preference, and you should try out a few of these techniques to see what works best for you.

If you really want to play it safe, create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and create a layer mask to isolate the teeth. It's essentially the same technique, but with the advantage that you can always go back to the original image if things go wrong!

Thanks for the replies!! I did have some trouble with the dodge tool... I imagine because, being the first time I ever used the tool,I didn't know what I was doing. :)

I'll let you know how the rest turn out...

Thanks again for all of your great information.
