Hi All, i've just had a slightly odd request. we have a school looking for a phone system with about 30 extensions.

What they also want is for the school bell for the end of periods etc to work through the phone system on an automatic basis. I know that you can quite easily attach a paging system but setting up an automatic bell through this is not something i've come across.

any ideas would be helpful.

cheers

Del

Tripping a relay with ringing current is a trivial matter, see for relays designed for this purpose.

Arranging to have lines ring at specified times is another story, dependent on which phone system is used, what features are available, and how you program it.

Have Fun

If I'm understanding you correctly they want the signal tone to be carried by the phone speakers.

Rather complicated but one way would be to build a DTMF generator and interface it and the audio line from the time system with an extension port on the telephone system. Then, and I'm thinking Partner here, you have the tone trigger it to dial page all (*71) and all phones programmed in that hunt group will have the tone coming from their speakers.

Another simpler way is to get the time system to generate a 90 volt ring signal then put it on a CO port. Program the system so that line rings on the extensions you want. Hopefully the system will have distinctive line ringing and you can come up with something that sounds good.

Thanks for the tips i'm going to go look into the viking item. I don;t know what kind of time system they have or are looking at so i'll see if the account manager knows.

Any idea how an external bell (playground) could be tied in if we use the page all function?

I have interfaced with a school's clock that was installed by Simplex. The clock was administered by the school for class starts and stops. The Simplex clock provided contact closure which was hooked to a Valcom 9924 ring generator, then hooked to the Amplifier. I think the Simplex clocks are expensive though, maybe $3000, but they last forever.

On further thought, the simplest solution is to convince the customer what a jughead idea this is.

As a wise man once said:

"The client that gets what he wants, gets what he deserves"

...But of course, he was in the advertizing field.

Just a bit of fun for a Wednesday afternoon, 10 minutes to quitting time.

it's ok jsaxe..... i've already pointed out to the sales guy who bought the idea to me what i thought of it :) and i think we've got the customer to take an alternate route on this one!
