I inherited a project with an OLD Cisco Call Manager 3.3 System. The site topology consists of 2 CM Servers one in NJ and one in NY. There is a P2P T1 between sites. The publishing site had an old Windows 2000 domain controller which was the FSMO holder for the domain as well as DHCP/DNS/WINS/FP. We have recently built 2 new 2003 domain controllers making one DHCP/DNS/FP and the other a DNS replica.
There is a core cisco switch setup with a seperate DHCP VLAN for the phones only. At one time the DNS settings in this core switch was pointing to the old Windows 2000 domain controller as well as a decomissioned domain controller for its secondary DNS. With the 2 new domain controllers we built we have migrated DNS to the new servers as well as the FSMO holder. We are looking to decomission this old W2k server however for some reason which we cannot figure out is when we pull the ethernet cable from the W2k server NIC to test the server as if it were decomissioned making sure all network topology is happy we come across a few phones that we cannot get to work. If we call these phones we get dead air. Phones do not ring! If we plug the old server back in the phones start ringing again.
So my question here is, if the core cisco switch is configured as its own VLAN for the phones only and setup with DHCP as well as pointing to the 2 new DNS servers and phones themselves from the handset are confirmed to be getting DNS settings from the switch then why when I remove the ethernet cable from the OLD W2k domain controller do some phones no longer ring when you try to call them?
Just an FYI.... upgrading call manager is not an option at this time. budget does not permit.
