Hi,

I need to replace an i2004 VoIP phone on a BCM50 PBX system. My concern though is that it is the x221 (primary BCM handset line) phone. All the other devices look to this phone for default settings it seems. I have "set relocation" turned on, and the phones are DHCP so that I could have the users move the phones themselves for internal location changes. The downside is to introduce a replacement phone with relocation turned on I'll have to de-register the 221 DN and then reprogram the replacement phone key by key instead of just plugging it in.

My question is can I turn off "set relocation" in the BCM, and then just swap in a new phone (programmed with the correct server IP and DHCP info) and have it replace 221 without a hiccup? without set relocation, how does the BCM know what phone is plugged into what extension if the phones are DHCP and not static? Should I make the IP of the current x221 static onto the replacement during the process to ensure it pulls the right programming? Let me know what you think, thanks!

Set relocation is only really used for the wired phones as this was present way back in the good old Norstar days!.

All that it meant was that with set reloaction turned on that a user could move their phone from one position to another and everything to do with that phone was transferred across.

For IP phones. this doesn't really apply as an IP phone can be placed within a customers network. What you may need to think about is the settings for registering an IP phone because you would need to untick the "keep DN alive" or "Auto assign DN's" box's!.

I may be wrong in thinking that relocation is still used for IP phones?.

All the best

i forgot about "keep DN alive", but I believe that just keeps things like "forward" alive if the phone is unplugged. Will there be any harm to the system if I de-register x221? I don't mind reprogramming a replacement set, but since I have to do this during business hours I don't want it to cause problems for any of their normal operations.

Deregistering the set will not harm the system. The only way to assign a used DN is to deregister the set first as the DNs are tied to the MAC address of the phone. ENable keep alive so users can still reach 221's mailbox. I usually turn keep alive on as a default for all ip sets. Just plug in the new phone and program the set w/ dhcp info, etc. All other programming info (set name, fwd na, etc) will still be there.
