HI
I would like to use my PC to make phone calls and I was going to buy a Voice PCI modem, but as I have a freeserve broadband connection (UK) I wanted to check to see if there is any way I can use that instead.

Freeserve have some software available but it looks expensive as they charge in 30 sec blocks of time and the quality of the call apparently is not always very good.

Does anybody know of any software that I can use on the broadband connection? or would I be better buying a Voice PCI modem.

All advise would be appreciated.

do you mean speaking to someone across the internet (and they're talking into their PC, not a phone)?

Or you using the internet to call someone's telephone?

Or you simply want to hook up a headset to talk to people using your PC, and you don't care how it's done?

One possible answer is Skype - I've heard positive results from friends who have used it.

Hi Manarth

I want to be able to call land lines from my PC using a mic and headset, freeserve software allows me to do this but as I said it is expensive and quality not always good.

I will look at Skype as you suggest.

Thanks for the help.

Hi

Just looked at Skype and although it looks good, it is only usable with other Skype users, so is not really what I wanted.

Thanks for the info though.

Convenxia offer a VoIP product, but it's in Beta. I'm expecting the Beta product next week, and will report on it's success or otherwise when I get the chance to play :)

Nyg, here in the states we have a bunch of VOIP providers, such as Vonage and Packet8. They're actually using phones on YOUR end as well, with a network -> phone adaptor in the middle. Not sure if something similar exists in the UK.
