I have a weird problem with some phones. They are 5330 phones connected to a linksys POE switch. The phones start to come up on the data vlan. They get the DHCP info from their DHCP server on the data vlan. At that point it releases, switches to the voice vlan and then shows the data vlans IP address and gets stuck there.

The DHCP on the data vlan is using option 128+ and appears to work fine. If I plug a phone into the voice vlan, then it works fine.

Any ideas what is going on?

first step is to remove DHCP from the equation and statically assign the set to equivelent values.

If it still fails check the network

If it succeeds then something is wrong in your DHCP options

I would suspect that the Data VLAN DHCP server is connected to a switch port that is a also a member of the Voice VLAN. This means that the DHCP server has access to BOTH VLANS and can provide addresses to any device on either VLAN.

What is supposed to be providing DHCP on the Voice VLAN? Make sure that that DHCP server isn't on a switch port that has membership on the Data VLAN as well.

I have seen this numerous times and the problem is usually very intermitant. Sometimes the Data DHCP server hands out an address first, sometimes it's the Voice DHCP server that is quicker.

Turn out the problem was the setting on the HP switch. It was set to auto-cross on the port, and the link was not comming up. Power worked. Turn it off and the phone came up.
