I've currently got a 850 in the workshop which is making a "ripping" sound as the paper comes out of the top output tray. I believe the ripping sound is actually the paper sticking to the transfer drum (eg. the wax is sticking to the drum and the paper sticks as well). This also causes the following pages to have ghost images of the previous pages. My current thinking is that the sticking is caused by the maintenance kit needing to be replaced. The machine has no other problems and has recently had the drum heater replaced due to corrosion on the halogen bulb contacts.

Any other ideas?

Check the lift pins on the side of the maintenance tray, repair with tie wraps.. look on the Xerox site for some more info. But this is probably your problem, the oil roller of the maintenance tray is not lubricating the drum enough with silicone oil.. causing the ink to stuck to the drum too much so that the transfix assembly can't transfer the ink to the paper, causing the ripping noise.

What you are descibing is a classic example of the lift pins on the maintenance drawer being worn and causing the oil roller to not oil the drum properly and therefore the inks sticks to the drum and the tearing noise is heard when paper exits. To remedy this you will need to replace the maintenance drawer, not the kit. i also reccommend that you replace the drum maintenance clutch as experience has showed me that if the drawer is replaced for the problem you described then with a new drawer the old clutch will fail giving you an error 07.004.45 or 07,005.47.
