I'm a printer Technician by trade but am trying to help out my Church (never have worked on a Phaser). They have a Phaser 850 printing letter-size paper for bulletins. At the bottom of the page, there is a duplicate faint "ghost image" of the last printed line, only to its right. When we print with heavy 28# paper, there is a black random smudge that is not legible across the top. They may be two different problems? I have no service manual. I'm wondering if there is a source for an electronic copy or inexpensive hard-copy of the service information? Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks!

In my opinion, as I am too a printer technician but not certified on these phasers, it could be around three things: 1 Check the maintenance roller located in tray A...if it gets dry then the image sometimes sticks to the roller and rolls over to the next page. The other could be a dirty printhead or clogged jet. Try running the ink jet test located under the service menu. I think the way to get in to that service menu is to scroll through the menu until you get to troubleshooting...once at that point, highlight troubleshooting and press the left arrow and at the same time while holding the left arrow hit the select button. Once in there, you can do all kinds of test prints and adjustments. Hope this helps a little.

Diagnostics is laptop based on this machine, so you won't be able to enter diagnostics through the front panel of the machine.
It won't be a missing jet or a dirty printhead either.
Check the lift pins on the side of the maintenance drawer (drawer A). Also check if the wiper blade in the drawer is dirty, check if the oil roller is lubricated (place a piece of paper on it, apply pressure and hold the paper to the light to see if oil was evenly applied to the paper).
If there isn't enough oil applied to the drum, ink won't transfer to the paper from the drum properly by the transfix roller. Hope this helps.

More information on the print quality problem (Phaser 850). The bulletins are printed landscape on 85." x 11" paper. The print defect is on the "long edge". About 1/2 in from the long-edge is the ghosting. The repetition rate of the ghosting is 5.5". I assume this 5.5 inch could be the circumference of the drum? The large oiled roller (maintenance kit item) looks great. So again, any advice appreciated.
