If you are getting error 15,004.45 and your bulbs look ok then read this.

I finally figured out why my 850DX was taking so long to come out of standby and too frequently pausing print jobs to display "Warming Up Please Wait".

The bulb contacts were burned and pitted, I removed the drum heater cleaned the ends of the bulbs and filed and reshaped the metal contacts of the heater assembly and put more of a bend inwards so they would make stiffer contact. Now the lights, as can be seen through the right side vent, pulse very often.

What was so confusing to me is that I had swapped the heater with another and was reassured that the bulbs were working fine because I could see them glowing brightly during the many power-up cycles that I went through. So when the "Warming Up Please Wait" and occasional 15,004.45 errors persisted I started the swapping of every part I could think of including, wiring harnesses, power supplies and circuit boards. As it turned out I should have checked the contacts when I first exchanged the heater unit, but I seemed delicate and I did not want to handle it more that I had to. My guess is that the smaller warming pulses sent to the heater during regular use were not enough to get through the burned/carbonized and deformed contacts.

I should also mention that, aside from the just after the initial power-ups, my right side fan was NOT coming on before the fix, and now it starts and stops all the time working in tandem with the bulb pulses to regulate the drum temperature.

Anyhow just thought I should post this as I found many references to this problem in this excellent forum which eventually lead to me suspect the contacts after using a multimeter to check the heater connector, see below (of course the method he describes for the 840 also works on the 850).

Special thanks to julbac (TechnicalUser) and his advice:

"I learnt a quick way to check the 2 bulbs in the heater assembly on an 840 without having to remove the unit, pins 3 & 5 (from left)on the bottom row of the assembly socket, with plug removed, should read 20 Ohms if both bulbs are ok.
The socket is accessible with the right cover removed and is located below and to left of fan."
