Phaser 8400 dp digital smear 1

I have a phaser 8400 which has done about 50,000 prints. I have started getting more and more frequent smears where almost every page (and all text/pictures) are smeared. But if you look closely, it is pixels smearing and not the ink! It varies in amount and is not just when I print, but the test pages do it too.
Seems like a weird one! Any ideas??

Try to clean first then repace if necessary.

Thanks -- clean or replace what? The drum?

The encoder disc.
Pull the rt side cover off and the drum fan off. VERY CAREFULLY take the clear plastic cover off. Cleac the little disc off. (do not use 409 cleaner to clean this disc as you will then have to replace the whole drum asm.) Blow it off with a little air when done.

I usually just replace the drum asm but that is when it has been under warranty.
