I have spent seveal hours trying to see if I can fix the following, and hoping somebody might have the solution or at least some pieces to the puzzle.

I have a Phaser 8400 that jams continuosly with a message "Paper Jam" open front cover. I have looked all over, opened the simple covers, and even removed some of the snap of pieces and cannot find any lose material.

Another piece of the puzzle is that what it is trying to accomplish is to load some paper to do some cleaning, but never gets past the jam.

Previous to this, it was working fine. A person wanted to improve the print colors, and ran some of the troubleshooting steps from the lcd to fix a white streak. I got involved when they stated it was jamming and they couldnt fix it.

I also say that when i first got it, there was a print smear on the drum of the red and black test pattern used for troubleshooting. The maintenance kit also was pretty dirty, still has chunks down deep but the clear "blade" is clean. Except that when it tries to load the paper, i do see some phantom small clumps or flakes on the drum and on the maintenance kit blades.

Another question i have is there a way to do some kind of deeper startup test by powering up and holding a button down?

let me know if you need any more info to give me a hand with this. much appreciated for any help at all.

Pull the maintenance kit out of the machine. Look toward the front of the machine, there is a plastic plate in front of where the kit sits. Is the plate black or white? If white more than likely it is broke and needs to be replaced, its called the drum maintenance pivot plate. Call xerox and see if they will replace under warranty as this is a known problem.

Thanks for the quick response. After reading a little but on the web, I kind of suspected this. I did call Xerox and they would not replace because it is out of warranty. I tried to work the angle whereby the part was known "defective" and therefore should be replaced free of charge. There response was that it is not "defective", just that the black piece is an improvement upon the white. What a load of corporate crap!

A couple of questions:

1. Outside of a visual inspection verifying that the piece is in fact white, is there any variables to determine that this is in fact the problem. alot of bumping and grinding, maintenace kit doesnt lift in a certain way, etc. which takes us to #2....

2. How hard a project is it to remove enough pieces to replace this piece on my own since it is not under warranty. i think i have seen a service manual on the web in a couple of places. is this doable, or are there so many pieces that are put together in such a way that it is beyond the scope of a computer tech....

thanks for any help you can give....

Xerox should cover this. I'm a service provider for Xerox on these printers, and the last one I did that had this problem, although it was back in January, Xerox sent the parts to us at no charge, and gave us labor reimbursement.

Rather than calling Xerox directly, call someone that does warranty work for Xerox, and play dumb. Tell them you have a phaser that's giving you problems, and after checking a few things, you suspect it's the maint kit kick plate, and cam shaft. (because the cams do break occassionally). Ask them if this is covered by a service note. (It may be, and the note may be expired, but it never hurts to ask.
