Does anyone have an idea of where to start looking for the problem. This printer is located in my wife's 2nd grade classroom. Was working fine last Friday after school. This morning it is flashing the red error light and reporting this error in the lcd.

Thanks for any help you can give.

This error is related to a Y-axis position failure. The drum is not in position.

Possible causes:

*Something is blocking the motion of the drum
*The y-axis belts or motor have failed
*Problem with the Y-axis encoder / signal

Be careful when removing (if you decide to do this) the y-axis encoder (behind left cover, black plastic, see-through window with encoder disc behind it). It is very sensitive to static electricity and you might blow it when you touch it.
Also keep the spacing of the encoder disc in mind when putting it back together, if the space is incorrect it will touch the sensor and it will fail after a while. Engineers have a "spacer tool" for this, you can do it by hand if you HAVE A GOOD look at what you're doing.

Another possibility to troubleshoot is by using diagnostics (Y-axis Encoder and Y-axis Geometry Tests). But you'll need the appropriate cable & tektronix diagnostics cable.
