We just bought a used 840 printer on ebay. When we fired it up the screen that came up said it was an 850N although the outside says 840. We had planned on it duplexing and it doesn't appear to do that...but the biggest problem is the printed image..the top half of the page prints fine but the bottom alf is very streaked with some areas having image and some areas blank and some with stripes. We put in a new maintence kit and half run through the cleaning a couple times (burning lots of crayons). Any thoughts and or suggestions would be helpful. We do have complaint in through ebay but the paypal bridge is burned since we had had shipping problems finally releasing that after getting a 50 refund.

If the printed start up or config page says 850N then either the main board was swapped out or it is just a exit cover labeled an 840, in any event what is printed out is the actual configuration of the printer. The "N" model will not duplex nor does it support high resolution/photo mode. In regards to the print quality issue, it sounds very odd. When you say top half and bottom half are you looking at the page in landscape or portrait? I would be curious as to what the diagnostic test print looks like. also open the exit cover and inspect to see if there is something riding along the silver drum which can scrap ink off as it is printing. Another thing, when you recieved it was there "Tektronix" ink in the ink loader or was it a 3rd party ink? Tektronix ink will have a stamp on the bottom of the ink stick.

Yes it was guess that the main board had been swapped out. Yes the ink is all stamped Tektronix. The picture was portrait. Opening the cover I see nothing scraping on the silver drum. I will see about the test sheet. I know we did several but most ended up in the trash. Taking the bottom expanded tray off we can't get any kind of image so we will need to put that on again to print. I might be able scan it and post the results on the web. Thanks for the info.
