I'm getting a paper jam error ...open front cover to clear but there is no paper in the front cover. I've checked everywhere for paper and the machine is clear. What could be the problem?

thanks

There is a sensor assy inside the front cover behind teh metal plate. Either a piece of paper is stuck holding the sensor tripped or one of the flags is broken. You can either run a piece of cardstock up through teh feed rollers to try and clear or remove the metal plate and inspect the flags. You will be able to see if the flag is broken at that point.

I'm not seeing any flags broken off. I've taken the preheater and upper feed roller assembly out and all seems fine. Awhile back, I broke a flag in the upper feed roller assembly and super glued it (carefully) back in place. That flag is still in place and seems to be ok....but are the flags that sensitive that if it was glued it might cause problems? It looks exactly like it did before it was broke.

I have never glued a flag back so I can't attest to how it would affect the sensitivity of teh sensor. Ideally you should put the printer in diags and test each sensor to figure out which one is being tripped that would help you narrow down the problem. It very well maybe the upper feed roller sensor assy itself that needs to be replaced.

ok thanks, I didn't even know that there was diags where you could test each sensor. We'll try that when i get it back together.

Maybe yer "half empty" {sorry} This issue usually turns out to be a worn lower feed roller, and pick-up roller.
If the paper in the tray is pulled up just to the separation pad, this is the case. Check the entry guide beneath the lower feed roller. There might be a paper scrap, or it might have a sharp edge on the plastic that snags the paper. Also: Check the solonoid on the top right, front, for a sticky flapper. Try adjusting the tensioner on the top left drive belt.
