Got hit with a new one today. Phaser 780. Somehow the shaft for the tensioner broke off. I have no idea how, so I need to figure out how to replace the assembly.

FWIW, any clue as to how this thing could break off besides user abuse?

Considering its steel I have no idea other than abuse how it could break off. Replacing the accumulator on a 780 is a major task. You will basically take this thing down to its chassis frame. The assy is removed from the top but everything in the back needs to come off as well. Good luck.

Any guess as to how much time would be required? Can I do it without the service manual?

Witout ever doing before and lack of service manual a fair guess is 3 hours. It can be done without a manual but it would be very useful considering that it is a major disassembly.
