Question: Printed the 'supplies usage' page this afternoon which showed the transfer roller - which was installed sept 10, 2004, as having a status of [OK] and at 5% coverage, a 'pages remaining' count of ">500".

Simple enough, but then later today, after having printed maybe 5-10 more pages, I get the message "fp Transfer Roller Expired".

What gives? How can the tranfer roller go from >500 to zero in 5-10 pages printed? Is something else wrong here or is the 'guestimating' feature of the printers firmware flakey at best?

First thing I would do is reset the printer by powering it on/off.

If it still says expired, the only other question is what is the 5% of coverage you are printing.

What I am thinking is that you were close to the >500 mark. and 5-10 pages at 30% coverage would put you below that mark relatively quick. 10 pages at 30% coverage is equivelent to 60 pages.

Check the configuration page and ensure the correct date is showing up for the printer. If teh date is wrong this can play havoc with the consumables. The dates can be set via Centerware IS, just plug in the printers ip address in the address window of internet explorer and the printer homepage will come up and you can reset the date there.

Agreed, coverage changes can modify the expected life. I printed the consumables page. The date was right, the time was off by 4 hours, but the printer moved from the East coast to the West Coast... its now right to the minute.
After printing the consumables page (which is probably 30% coverage) I then printed the graphics and business samples pages and a duplex page - which could be 60-70% coverage. I'd say realistically I printed about 5 or so pages after the consumables page.

However, the question still is, the status was given as "OK > 500 pages ". Now I've not used this printer line before - so I don't know what the other status reports can be that this thing reports. Is a brand new tramsfer roll also going to show up as OK and > 500 pages? 50,000 pages is greater than 500, after all. Or does >500 mean 501-999?

I did turn it off and let it sit for 15 seconds and powered it back on and got the fpTransferRoller Expired message still showing up.

The thing I want to avoid is buying a new transfer roller and it turns out to be another issue. I also want to understand how to interpret the report when its that 'low fidelity' such as going from OK>500 to GONE in 5-10 pages printed.

The transfer roller has a life span of 15k pages. remove teh transfer roller assy and clean the adc sensor and look to see if waste toner can be seen through teh clear window of the transfer roller assy. If toner is present then it may indeed be at end of life. There may also be a problem with the toner full sensor, make sure there isnt any toner accumulation on sensors which may cause false error messages. Finally if it is still under warranty give a call to xerox or a service provider.

Marty,

Thanks for the tip. I have asked the same original question of Xerox and am awaiting their reply. I'll take a look at the parts you refered to this evening when I get back to the printer. I'll look at the parts diagrams to figure out where the various sensors are on the transfer roller and see how they look.

I know its not the correct solution, but pulling the 2 screws and dumping the toner in the transfer roller and cleaning out the clear window collection window that the optical sensor in the printer reads did the job. A bit messy and a small vac for cleanup was usable. At least now I can print until the new transfer roller arrive.
