PGP CommandLine 6.5.8

I have some VB applications that use this version of PGP to encrypt text files. The applications just shell out to the PGP.exe and pass the appopriate commands to do this. I am experiencing a problem where when the file reaches a certain size (around 150kb) PGP fails to encrypt and the users are getting a DR. Watson error. When I investigate the issue there is almost always a file with the extension .$00. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so what can you provide some insight?
