Hi - I'm working with a client that has Pervasive 2000 (SP4) and Macola 7.6.200, running on an NT server. Once or twice a week, the Pervasive services stop, and all workstations stop responding (to Pervasive). the PVSW log file shows entries like the following;

04-07-2004 10:00:52 NTMKDE 00000086 NTDBSMGR.EXE SERVER4 E System Error: 620.9.0 File: D:\MACAPPS\MACOLA75\DATA\IMINVBIN.BTR

Pervasive's website shows 620 as being NT, but gives no more breakdown on what might be causing the errors. Any clues?

Peter.

Take a look in the NT event viewer to see if there are any other error messages in there

Is it just Pervasive? We have something like that here with 8 that we're trying to get to the bottom of - the difference is that someone had a word document open on the server around the same time as the problem and they lost connection to that as well. On the PCC the configuration doesn't show the engine settings either. We think it could be a server type thing but we're still checking it out

Everything we are seeing so far tells us it is a Pervasive only problem i.e. other services on the server keep functioning, and network access to the server still functions. The server slows down considerably though, as resource usage spikes to 100% when the lockup occurs.

Peter,

I also have a client having almost the same situation. I'll have the read this thread.

I've experienced this at a couple of sites. Do you have sp4 hot fixes installed? Where is your page file located & how big is it? I had to move the page file to the D partition at one site because the c partition was only 4 gigs & was down to under 1 gig free. Once moved, my utilization problem went away. At my other site, it was a 3rd party app sucking up all the server resources from macola. Once we tweaked the program, all is now fine. I did have to reinstall pervasive, though, everytime the 3rd party app took all my resources and shut down the pervasive services.

Macolahelp,

Forgive my denseness, but what is a page file? How can I tell where it is located?

I used to know some of this stuff but I spend 90% of my time on MS SQL Server now.

Macolahelp - I saw your post on the problem you describe - however, this site uses no third party applications outside of Crystal and MSAccess. I think the page file makes sense, and saw an article on Pervasive's website that also suggested this might be causing the problem. It would make sense too, in that this problem has only manifested itself recently, and no software changes have occurred (other than 7.6.200.....). I'm going to suggest the customer moves the page file to a larger partition and see if it corrects the problem - I'll post the results here.

dgillz - I'll do my best to describe the page file - it's used by the O/S as a place to 'swap' information in and out of memory.

The file is called pagefile.sys. It is located in the root directory of your partition. You can specify which drive it goes to & how big it should be in the virtual memory settings in my computer advanced performance. The page file is used as a temporary storing & sorting area so that your application doesn't consume all available system resources. The other setting I like to configure in pervasive is to allocate resources at startup & to not set the switch to return to minimal state if inactive. By doing so, I verify that pervasive gets its resources on server start up and keeps them. Then, if a large process starts, pervasive is ready to go and doesn't have to fight with other services and apps that are running.
