Personalised menus not Personalising !

I have just bought a Sony Vaio laptop with XP Pro.
The 'Use Personalised Menus' option is switched on but nothing is 'peronsonalising' i.e. all the programs and all my favorites show the whole time.
I copied my favorites from my old laptop but cant see why that would matter. I have turned it on and off several times but it still shows everything which is quite annoying when I have 10's of programs and 100's of Favorites to navigate - anyone had this before and find a solution.

Personalized Menus is enabled by default for both the Start menu and the Internet Explorer Favorites menu. You may need to use your computer for several weeks before unused menu items are demoted (hidden).
