I have an excel vba application which has worked OK until someone created a personal.xls file. Now the application will not open with the message "runtime error 1004 method of object '_worksheet'failed".
My first thought, delete personal.xls. But I cannot find it. It is NOT in the excel startup folder, cannot be found by searching the hard drive, (inc. hidden and system folders)
How can I delete it? Any thoughts would be most appreciated as I cannot find why the application failes because of this because I can't open it!

Not sure if it will work but open excel and then do file->save as. This might give you where the file is stored.

Hi brainstorms,

Personal.xls should (on WIn XP) be in "Documents and Settings\userid\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART" but DO NOT DELETE it. Apart from being rude and inconsiderate it only gives a short term work around; it doesn't solve your problem, which will arise again next time somebody creates one. If it really causes a problem with your code find out what the problem is and fix it.

Enjoy,
Tony

Thank you both. I think both your answers were contained in my original post.

Hi brainstorms,

I've just re-read your original post and it's hard to see what is causing the problem. A couple of points ..

Firstly, my apologies. If someone has created a personal.xls (or anything else) with failing code in, it needs to be sorted, and obviously new code is most likely to be the cause of new problems.

Secondly, if you can't find a personal.xls on disk what makes you say you have one.

And finally, you can open a workbook without running macros by pressing and holding Shift while you do it - then at least you will be able to see what you've got.

Enjoy,
Tony

Thanks Tony,

Excel opens showing personal.xls, that's why I assume there is one.

No I can't think what might cause the problem either. personal.xls certainly shouldn't be a problem even if it is present, so there must be something in the opening script of the application that's doing something weird. Clearly the application must be fixed as any other user who does have personal.xls is likely to have the same trouble as I am. Opening without enabling the macros does let me into the app. though, so thanks for that.

Have now found the file, having worked through all the like user folders (there are several) - your locatio was spot on thanks. Can't explain why searching including system and hidden files would not find it however.

Now back to the apps code to see why it should object to the file in the first place! It has sveral modules, stuffed with poorly structured code (I inherited this) so it will not be an easy task.

I appreciate the swift responses.

Ah, I misunderstood when you said application- you meant your app, not the Excel app.

You should be able to single step your app. My first guess would be that, if the addition of a workbook causes a problem, a workbook (or window) is being addresed by number and the numbers have changed.

Enjoy,
Tony
