It is to my understanding that the personal.xls file is to be kept in the c:\program files\microsoft office\office\xlsstart folder as a hidden file. If I leave it as a hidden file, it does not start up when I start Excel. However, if I remove the hidden attribute, it works fine. Any ideas? It's supposed to be a hidden file.

You don't give the property of hidden in Windows Explorer, you do it in Excel by hiding the workbook--Window-Hide. Save it, close Excel, say Yes, you want to save changes to personal.xls. Your are right, it should be in the xlstart folder.

When you open Excel, you should have "book1" open and if you go to Window-Unhide, the personal.xls file should be there for you to unhide, but you shouldn't unhide it.
