I am having a problem that shouldn't be that hard to fix, but I can't seem to figure it out. I have a file in the xlstart folder, called "personal.xls" with macros in it. The security level is at low, it isn't on the disabled list, and it won't automatically open when excel opens. If I double click on it, it opens. It just won't open when excel is first started. Is there any way to correct this?

Hi sahmiele,

What version(s) are you running? Do you have anything disabled in Excel (Help | About MS Excel | Disabled Items)? Also, what do you have for your setting under Tools | Options | General (tab) and Ignore other applications?

The file has not been disabled, ignore other applications is unchecked.

Are you sure that the file is not open? As the purpose of 'Personal.xls' is to store macros, by default is created invisible, i.e. its window is hidden.
You can try Window>Unhide to see if it is available, or go to Visual Basic Editor to check for opened projects and edit macros.
The security settings change enabling macro options, in any case file should be opened.

Another guess: depending on office version and system settings and rights, excel can create more than one XLStart directory, some may not be valid. You can move your file to another place and record any macro in personal macros workbook. When closing excel, you will be prompted to confirm to save personal.xls. Next you can try to find it.
You can also copy a file with no macros to XLStart and see if it opens automatically.
