I have installed it with FP98 and then upgraded to FP2000 and I have not had one problem yet as I make pages for extra money. It comes on when I start the pc and the only way I know it is there is that it remains in my system tray. Try it first and then see what happens. I used the upgrade method, so if you can try that.
Master Frodo
It runs fine on mine, though I'm not using Transaction Server. I started out on Win98 and upgraded to Me, but I've since uninstalled and reinstalled PWS. It is a bit tricky to get it working. Why not try it and if you have a problem maybe we can help. Rick Sprague
hmm...for me, PWS seems to acting very touchy on Windows ME. Sometimes it works ok, but other times sites I have created have broken image links. The first time this happened I almost pulled my hair out trying to debug my html because it seemed like the code was ok. Upon rebooting, PWS started behaving and my images were back. PWS also seems to cause lockups from time to time, and sometimes IE takes forever finding pages, even though they are in MY /localhost/ directory, and should load MUCH quicker than a remote site. Any suggestions? I loved IIS on Win2k but Win2K locks up on my Via Athlon motherboard so I can't use that.
Personal Web Server (PWS) for using ColdFusion On Windows ME
I already had ColdFusion 4.5, FrontPage 2000, and DreameaverUltraDev installed. (I am not sure if any
of these applications have any relevance, but you never know.)
Downloaded the Mtssetup.exe to a folder called Temp on your c:\ drive.
*You may need to create this folder if one does not already exist.
Downloaded the Personal Web Server (PWS) Files to the same Temp Folder on your c:\ drive. If you do not already have the PWS Files you can download them at
Extract the Mtssetup.dll, by running the Mtssetup.exe, to the Temp Folder on the c:\ drive. Move the Mtssetup.dll into the NTOPTPAK folder that came with the PWS Setup Files.
Reboot
Go to your Temp Folder and run the PWS Setup.
*Note I used the Typical Setup. Let it run its course and if you receive any errors, just click through them.
* Read this section thoroughly... the entire thing before proceeding any further.
At the very end of the document it states: "If you already have PWS installed and it is giving you errors,
try removing everything (add/remove) but Transaction Server, then reboot and add the rest."
Do that...remove everything (add/remove) but Transaction Server, then reboot and add the rest.
*You will still receive the same error messages but just click through them.
Reboot
Now install ColdFusion Server. Whalla!! Well, at least for me it was a Whalla... I know this may sound pretty harsh, but, Good luck if you are still unable to
get this to work for you. I spent about 3 days or so trying to figure this puppy out.
BTY: If you so desire to scrape Win ME altogether, you will need to create a boot disk in order to get to the MSDOS Prompt at startup (or so I have read). Another quirk that came with Win Me.
I was having difficulty installing MTS on my Win ME machine; I kept getting the "Unknown error...0x80004005" message, and MTS wouldn't install properly. I was using the Win NT Option pack downloaded from the Microsoft website, and the problem is the mtssetup.dll file included in that pack is not the most up-to-date. If you visit

Thanks for all of the notes everyone:
I ended up, after many tries, of simply:
1.) Downloading PWS from microsoft through that same link everyone talks about.
2.) Put in the newest MSTSetup.dll into the folder that microsoft downloads into.
3.) Then just did a typical installation.
(I tried al those wacky ideas o add/remove one thing at a time and so on, but I kept getting errors and Interdev would never see the server when starting a new project.)
--Instalation went in with no prompts/errors.
4.) Turned on Interdev and started a new project with my computer's name as the server (i.e. drewlaptop)
5.) And it went through finally.

also did this along the way, but don't know if it meant anything.

Download the patch and implement per the instruction in this KB article.
3) Important! Do a Custom install of PWS, installing only the Transaction Server component. To do this, uncheck all the options, then check Transaction Server - it will add checks to the other components needed for it, but not the Personal Web Server option.
4) After Setup completes and a reboot, re-run Setup and add PWS. Reboot after Setup completes.
5) PWS should now work. Easiest way to implement using it for local copies of your web pages is to copy the contents of the entire local folder structure
of your web site to C:\Inetpub\
(or the folder you selected during PWS setup). To clarify, if the local copy of your web site is in D:\MyWebSite, with the default start page and all sub-folders located there, you copy all the files and sub-folders, but not the D:\MyWebSite folder itself.
6) If you are using ASP and your start page is default.asp, allow your file to overwrite the default.asp file already in C:\Inetpub\
If you are using index.htm or some other start page, you need to rename the PWS default.asp file so it is not the default page for the local site (or add index.htm Advanced Options for PWS manager).
1) PWS Setup replaced regsvr32.exe with an old version. Extract regsvr32.exe from the WinMe Setup files to C:\Windows\System to replace the old version that PWS installed there.
2) My linked .js files would not work at first because they were in a folder called "Scripts", but PWS comes pre-configured with a Virtual Directory by that same name. So, references to that folder were actually going to the
Virtual Folder, and the requested .js file did not exist there.
Solution: Open the Advanced Options page of PWS manager and remove or rename the "Scripts" Virtual Directory.
dubdubw's solution works perfectly.....only other thing i need to do that wasnt spelled out was to make sure you install the frontpage extensions as another step to add on to the end.
fyi, i am running windows ME on a p3-1ghz with 128m ram and using visual interdev with no problems at all now.

PERSONAL WEB SERVER AND WINDOWS ME
If you're one of the people who've had problems installing Personal Web Server on Windows Me, Microsoft has a technical support document that explains how to do it. The problem arises if the registry is large when you attempt to install PWS or MTS, but you can fix the problem by downloading the updated version of the Mtssetup.dll file
and reinstalling PWS or MTS. You'll find step-by-step instructions at the URL below.
