Help!!!!!

I want to use dreamweaver ultradev and they told me to load a personal web server to my computer. I am running windows me. After downloading the PWS from microsoft.com (and encountering several errors along the way) i am unable utilize DWUD. There doesnt appear to be a proper connection between the folders.

It took a while, but I think I finally have a handle on PWS. I never heard of DWUD, though. Can you describe what it's for?

Your problem is probably in setting up virtual folders for the DreamWeaver file system folders. The DreamWeaver documentation should list the virtual folder names needed, the corresponding file system folders, and the access permissions required for each.

To add the virtual folders, first start Personal Web Manager. Click the Advanced icon. This displays a tree of your current virtual folders. Click on your <Home> folder, then click the Add button. In the dialog, click the Browse button, then enter or navigate to the main folder for DreamWeaver. In the Alias box, type the corresponding virtual folder name, and set the Access check boxes to the permissions given in the documentation. When you click OK, the tree is redisplayed with the new folder added.

For each subsequent virtual folder, click its parent virtual folder in the tree before you click the Add button. Then proceed as above.

One more thing: You must have a Hosts file in your Windows folder. Windows comes with a sample hosts file called Hosts.sam, which you can just copy to Hosts (with no file name extension).

Once the folders are set up, go back to Personal Web Manager's Main page and click the Start button. PWS should then be able to serve DreamWeaver files to your browser or whatever.

Warning: If you have an Internet connection active, PWS will also server any files in your virtual folders to requestors on the net. Hackers routinely poll the net for unwitting PWS users. If they find you, they can access anything in your virtual folders, subject to the access permissions you've defined (the Access check boxes for each folder). This means they could read, overwrite, or delete your files, or even run programs in the virtual folders. To protect yourself, always turn off PWS before you connect to the Internet. This means clicking the Stop button in Personal Web Manager, not just closing the PWM window. Another option is to get yourself a personal firewall program, which will block requests from the net.
