Is there any way to deny permissions to a folder via Explorer...but enable that permission if the use wants to run an .exe in that folder from a desktop icon?

If not . . . does anyone know of software that would audit access to the files in that folder, from specific people?

WINDOWS 2000 HAS THIS ABILITY THROUGH A PERMISSIONS CALLED "TRAVERSE FOLDER/ EXECUTE FILE". NT 4.0 DOES NOT HAVE THIS ABILITY. YOU CAN NOT DENY THE USER ACCESS TO THE FILE AND EXPECT THE USER TO BE ABLE TO RUN AND EXE.

AS LONG AS AUDITING HAS BEEN ENABLED, YOU CAN ENABLE FILE AND OBJECT ACCESS AUDITING WITHIN NT.

Yes, you can use a tool called Hyena for sharing out various folders in NT 4.0. I use it on an NT network and
it works like a sweet thing....
