We have an old MS Access 97 database that we need to get into but it hasn't been used in several years and the original designer is no longer around. Apparently it was set up to be used by a workgroup because we get an error message saying we don't have the right permissions to use the mdb object. Nobody remembers the workgroup setting and there's no older PCs here that are still were set up to use it. Any way of getting past this issue? We just want to look at it to see the original structure so we can use it as a model for a single user database I'm working on.

b88bsr,

Try this and post back with results

1. In Windows Explorer, locate the folder where the database resides.

2. Click the database, and then click Properties on the File menu.

3. In the Properties dialog box, click the Security tab.

4. Customize the permissions for a particular account, and then click OK.

For example, open using a valid user account, and then give Full Control permissions to the user account.
5. Start Access, and then open the database that you reset permissions on.

Hope you find this useful

I followed the steps, gave myself full rights and I'm tset as the admi on the PC. Still same message. I thought maybe I could start a new database and import forms, tables, etc...but same message came up here as well.

b88bsr,

When you did this were you logged on as a user with admin rights?

If not do this, if you donot have these rights get someone who does and have them do this.

If no joy with permissions, move to the link and perform a take ownership

HOW TO: Take Ownership of Files

Hope you get this back

My login has admin rights so that wasn't it. I followed the link and took ownership but still no luck.
The people here remember having to be part of a workgroup in order for the file to open but they don't remember the workgroup name. Looks like I may be out of luck huh?

b88bsr,

Wow, could not take ownership even as admin???

That is all I can suggest. Hope someone else might have had this problem and found a solution.
