Is there any way to setup files sharing on a client machine and specify specific rights to certain users/groups without running server software? We've got a machine that's currently hosting/translating files from pictures to plotter. But I'd like to somehow protect the files so that the only people who can make changes are the ones uploading, and not the guys on the end by the plotter. I know you can specify different rights to individual folders in Microsoft Windows Server software, but this machine is running XP, just wondering if there's any way to prevent someone from modifying them, without locking out the uploaders. I know this is doable in a unix based environment, but can Windows do it?

Thanks.

If its XP Pro then yes.
You would need to be an administrator in the machine, and uncheck simple file sharing in the tools->Folder Options->View menu.

The you can right click a folder, and choose the Scurity tab and remove or place people or groups who can access the folder, and what they can do.

You can totally remove a user or a group, and they won't have any access to the folder.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Thanks, we're good to go.
