I have tried this on 3 servers and i need a workaround i think. What i have attempted to do is rename the old index page of a website to index.htm.old and rename the new index page to index.php. On my server it allows me to do this when the owner of the files is apache or when the files are in the root of the website folders (/var/ When i tried to do this on 2 hosting sites (FTP the files then run them in the browser) i got permission denied again.

Is there any way i can do this without having to manually FTP the files across?

I hope this makes sense to someone!

Thanks

It all depends, as you have learned, on permissions.

Basically, the use as which your web server runs must have permission to rename these files. If you can arrange that, you won't have to use FTP.
