I am told that even when cleared from the recycle bin (Win 98SE) traces still remain of file contents on my PC. I think there is a way of permanently getting rid of these 'deleted' files. Can anyone help please.

I recommend East-Tec Eraser 2003, it has all kinds of overwriting techniques to choose, and its also free to try. It overwrites Recycle bin files, deleted files, browser files, deleted emails, its full of options.

Win98se- I acquired McAfee utilities version 4 two or three years ago in a package purchase with a McAfee virus scan.
Its file shredder has options relating to deleted files, file slack, and free disk space.

Norton has a "wiper" program also.

Try NecroFile from JaySan, it's free and does the job admirably.

try Evidence Eliminator. I ran it and found over 500 files that i thought were gone. they are now and so is part of windows, so be very careful on clicking the mouse.

Thank you all for your helpful comments. Much appreciated.
