Is it necessary to reboot a 250 every so often? No one has ever told us to do this and someone else told me that this should be done like every six months to keep the hard drive data in order, sort of like a defrag in windows. The discussion came up when talking about when I had to turn msg waiting indicators back on, because of a pbx reboot.

With my knowledge about OCTEL systems, periodically reboots should not be necessary. We have had systems running for over 13 years without powering them down.
Most of our systems are OCTEL 200/300 and VMX-100.
What might give you the problems that you describe, could be lack of groundig between the PBX and the OCTEL. A good common grounding is recommended and my experience tells me that many problems have been avoided since we began grounding our systems. Also using the ferrite beads / ferrite cores to all lines into the OCTEL system (also the ower cord) will help avoid problems.
