Period at end of computer name

Can anyone help me? I keep changing my computer name and for some reason, it keeps putting a period at the end. Does this have something to do with DNS suffix settings? I think this may have something to do with my email issue as well. I'm able to receive email but when I send out, I get an error "No transport provider is available." I have not been able to send out email via my Outlook since I set it up. I have to do it via webmail. Any help would be appreciated.
