Can anyone recommend any tools/tips or other reference materials for doing general performance/load testing for a web site?

I found this page which has a lot of items on it, but it'll take me some time to research all of these and narrow it down. Any suggestions or references would be much appreciated.

Apache JMeter enables you to construct test plans consisting of URLs, number or request per unit time, ramp up periods for max request frequency, etc. It plots graphs, saves data, etc. 'Supports HTTP and SOAP and RPC (I think). Anyway, it is a good free tool that will do a lot of thorough testing and report in a number of formats.

'hope this helps
