Hi

Quick question ...

We have a Dell Poweredge 2900 (file and print) 2003 server which has Raid 5 for the data drive. Occasionally the Average Disk Queue spikes at 100% which casues a freeze. Is there any way to find out which file (or process) is causing this issue. Have looked at other aspects such as defragmentation etc.

Many thanks in advanced.

If you fire up perfmon under the Process performance object select the IO Data Operations / sec for the counter, and select all instances. When it happens again you should see a spike from what ever process it is.

Keep in mind that only the processes which are running when perfmon fires up will be shown.

Thanks mrdenny

That's a step in the right direction. When this freeze occurs im sure its a particular file the user is performing file operations but its identifying which file that is.

Some kind of counter to to list user file activity when the peak occurs or something???

Make sure your AV solution isn't trying to scan any large DB files in the file system. I've seen that cause problems. This can include files like .pst file, etc.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

No there isn't. You can use Computer Management to see what files the users are accessing over the network shares.
